To get to the Start TH: From the city of Lone Pine, it takes half an hour to ascend to the TH CG. From Route 395 in Lone Pine, turn west at the traffic light onto Whitney Portal Rd. After 3 miles, turn left on Horseshoe Meadow Rd. Drive 20 miles up mountain switchbacks to the end at Horseshoe Meadow. Logistics: Garry and Larry will meet in Yosemite ahead of this schedule. Larry will park his car at Yosemite for shuttle at end of hike. Garry and Larry will ride to the start at Horseshoe Meadow/Lone Pine to meet Fanny, Leslie, and Margaret, flying into Las Vegas on Friday night. Larry will pick up the PERMIT at the Interagency Office in Lone Pine on Friday and secure a campsite for Friday night. Start first thing Saturday morning with a 20-mile objective to reach Crabtree Meadow. We will all cram into Larry's car at the finish and shuttle back to Horseshoe Meadow/Lone Pine to retrieve other two vehicles. Considerations: (send me other considerations for inclusion here: jedirunner@windstream.net) 1. Consider beginning with 6.5 days of food with resupply provisions for 6.5 days to be shipped for pickup to Vermillion Valley Resort. 2. Bear Cannisters are Required. Given that 6.5 days of food will not fit into a bear cannister, we will attempt to camp where there are bear boxes (see map of bear boxes), however, as an alternative consider using odor-free bags (or loksaks) for storage of excess food in your pack, or we can hang the excess if a tree is available. Bear Advice. 3. Following the Fat Dog race, I will be collecting provisions for resupply at Vermillion Resort (See Guidelines) from Fanny, Leslie, and Margaret for a combined shipment of one or two boxes, along with my own, from a US Post Office, to economize on cost. Garry - you will have to make your own arrangements for resupply at Vermillion unless we cross paths in early August in BC (keep me advised). 4. WAG Bags are not required on JMT, except in the Whitney Zone. Discretion and trail courtesy are expected.
